Tips to practice the reading section of TOEFL iBT

Each person can have his or her own strategy. Here after is my strategy:

Step 1: When I see the reading passage on the screen, I read the headline to know what the passage talks about. I scroll the mouse to the end of the passage to count the number of paragraphs.

Step 2: I read the first question. If it is a detail question, I find the paragraph to answer it. If it is a general question, I read the first sentence of each paragraph to answer.

Step 3: I continue to read and answer questions. While reading, I take notes of important ideas. When finishing all detail questions, general questions will appear. By taking notes, I already have a layout of the passage.

The Inference question is the most difficult question to me so I take more time to think and choose the best answer among 4 choices.

Tips:

1. I always read all 4 answer choices before picking the right choice. If the question is to fill in the table, I read all choices and eliminate the wrong ones (out of scope, out of passage, choices having extreme words such as the most, all …) and fill in the table with the rest of choices.

2. I do not read word by word but I skim the passage to understand what the passage is about and I make sure to understand the mains ideas of the passage.

If I don’t know new vocabulary, I guess the meaning of sentence.
